ジャカルタ出身でYoung Magic（Carpark）のメンバーでもあるMelati Malay、Human Pitchの創始者でもあるマルチメディア・アーティスト、Tristan Arp、100% silkからリリースしている匿名プロジェクトKaaziによる多国籍ミュージック・プロジェクトAsa Tone。ジャカルタのジャングルの仮説スタジオにて10日間で録音し、Leaving Recordsから2020年初頭にリリースしたデビュー・アルバム『Temporary Music』が各所で話題となり、ミュージック・マガジン 「ベスト・アルバム 2020」のエレクトロニック・ミュージックで４位に入るなど、未だロングセラーとなっている彼らと、エレクトロニック・ミュージックのパイオニアとして知られる重鎮Ariel Kalmaがまさかの邂逅！
パリ生まれのエレクトロニック・ミュージックのパイオニアであり、1970年代のGRMの卒業生でもあるアリエル・カルマが、多国籍のニューヨーク・トリオ、アサ・トーン（Kaazi、Melati ESP、Tristan Arp）と共に、世代を超えた、向精神的な、エレクトロ・アコースティックなスタジオでの対話を重ね、リズムと管楽器の弾力性、あるいは初期のリスナーが観察したように「時間と空間」を探求している。
パンデミックの最中、オーストラリアの熱帯雨林にあるアリエルのスタジオで偶然彼に出会ったMelatiとKaaziは、Kalmaと長時間のライヴ・テイクを録音し始め、遠隔地からTristan Arpの生物発光のようなシンセの即興演奏を遠隔操作で織り交ぜていった。
そして数年後、ニューヨークとインドネシアのそれぞれの家でエディットし完成した本作『O』は、アルバムの演奏者全員の人生における重要な瞬間を記録したものであり、危機の時代における記憶とつながりへの頌歌だ。スティール・フルート、カンティラン、モジュラー・シンセサイザー、ザフーン、テナーサックス、EWI、周囲の熱帯雨林のフィールド・レコーディング、そして人間の声のちらつく断片によって照らされる。
A collaborative release between ASA TONE — whose Japan shows last year were superb — and legendary French experimental musician Ariel Kalma, who fuses French new age, ambient, and minimal elements. Asa Tone is a multinational music project comprising Jakarta-born Melati Malay (also a member of Young Magic / Carpark), multimedia artist Tristan Arp (founder of Human Pitch), and Kaazi, an anonymous project releasing on 100% Silk. Recorded over ten days in a makeshift studio in the jungle outside Jakarta, their debut album "Temporary Music," released on Leaving Records in early 2020, became a talking point everywhere, placing 4th in the electronic music category of Music Magazine's "Best Albums 2020" and remaining a long-seller — and now comes this unexpected meeting with Ariel Kalma, the heavyweight known as a pioneer of electronic music!
Paris-born electronic music pioneer and 1970s GRM alumnus Ariel Kalma joins the multinational New York trio Asa Tone (Kaazi, Melati ESP, Tristan Arp) for a series of intergenerational, psychoactive, electro-acoustic studio dialogues, exploring the elasticity of rhythm and wind instruments — or, as early listeners observed, "time and space."
During the pandemic, Melati and Kaazi happened to meet Ariel at his studio in the Australian rainforest and began recording extended live takes with Kalma, remotely weaving in Tristan Arp's bioluminescent synth improvisations from afar.
Completed years later through edits made at their respective homes in New York and Indonesia, "O" documents a pivotal moment in the lives of everyone who played on the album — an ode to memory and connection in a time of crisis. It is illuminated by steel flute, kantilan, modular synthesizer, xaphoon, tenor saxophone, EWI, field recordings of the surrounding rainforest, and flickering fragments of the human voice.
