This work lovingly explores the texts of 37 haiku spanning the 17th to the 20th centuries. It pays homage to this long-standing Japanese literary form by bringing these short verses into the realm of musical art and situating them within an expanded network of sonic relationships. The performance features Hodgkinson’s own clarinet, along with French horn, viola, violin, cello, and acoustic guitar, using crisply recorded audio. The voices and instrumental sounds fuse with poetic imagery; each casts light, casts shadows, reveals hidden meanings, and resonates with the work as a whole. The musical language Hodgkinson chose for this composition possesses a breadth that corresponds to the diverse and rapid unfolding of the world seen in the rhetorical devices of haiku—such as honka-dori and tori-awase—and in the techniques of renga poets. Furthermore, the Japanese haiku and their English translations provide additional layers of meaning, resonance, and communication. The exchange with British poet Harry Gironis, who sent Hodgkinson the English translations of the haiku, served as the catalyst for this project. This work is an incomparable piece, distinctly different from anything Hodgkinson or Kamura has accomplished to date. Hodgkinson’s commentary detailing the creation of *Haiku In The Wide World* is also a must-read. The CD version and the 2-LP set contain the same content. The jacket features Japanese-style artwork.
