TROOP MUSIC WORKS - Cat No: TMW-003
- updated:2025-07-18
A new release from Troop Music Works, the label headed by Masafumi Onishi, aka Telly — former manager of Troop, the now-defunct Kobe institution that helped define the city's music scene, and currently running Bar Inc. This is the latest from DCTL, the collaboration between Telly and DJ DUCT, a distinctive turntablist, beatmaker, and producer who has been performing since the late '90s using nothing but a single turntable loaded with effects.
Track List
DCTL is a unit formed by Masafumi Onishi, aka TELLY, the label owner of Troop Music Works, and DJ DUCT, who is renowned for his turntable skills that span a wide range of genres, from Hip Hop and Rare Groove Funk to Detroit Techno and Deep House. The raw warmth of analogue equipment, rough sequences mainly using samplers and rhythm machines, familiar nostalgic samples, and adorable DIY output that clearly conveys that it has been carefully crafted by hand.

The first cassette release on TROOP MUSIC WORKS, and the newest from DCTL — DJ DUCT + TELLY — who also had a 2023 release on Detroit's MotorCity Wine Recordings. Raw machine grooves paired with sampling-driven funky house tracks that trace a lineage through PAL JOY, NICK HOLDER, hip-hop, and Chicago house. "Is it Coming," "Got Money," "Nobody" and more combine old-school, one-of-a-kind phrases with chopped-up edits, riding an exquisite sense of timing that races wordlessly between the earthy and the serious, all wrapped in machine-groove funkiness.
