Island Closest To Heaven

  • Cat No: TONTON03
  • updated:2025-09-26

Format

12inch 3690 JPY

The third release from the Romanian label 〈TON TON〉, which launched with a release by Petre Inspirescu. This 12-inch from LAIR—a key figure in the Romanian music scene who has been involved in the cutting-edge electro scene derived from JUKE, UKG, and GRIME—is released by the label 〈Tessier-Ashpool Recordings〉, which bills itself as “the non-fiction audio R&D division of the fictional dynastic conglomerate Tessier-Ashpool S.A.” and has been a key figure in the Romanian music scene. The EP’s title, “The Island Closest to Heaven,” apparently derives from Final Fantasy VIII. Be sure to check out “Sailing the Seven Nanseas” (sample 2), a track that incorporates vocals over a foundation of dubby, tribal rhythms and electronic sounds.

"The album spans a wide range, from Balearic breakbeat workouts and intimate dub siestas to playful interpretations of world music and electro-funk. Liar’s talent for cultural and stylistic fusion permeates the entire work, featuring homages to Paisley Park, falsetto whispers, comical interjections, City Pop ornamentation, ’70s radio-style psychedelia, and samples from Final Fantasy—all vividly fused as symbols of unwavering hope, love, and peace.”
He’s apparently part of Infinite Machine, which also included artists like Bwana, WWWINGS, and Aphix, and has provided remixes for THE XX. Liar, aka Alin Mihai Ceauselu. I believe this is his first release on Newtone. (Original Japanese text by Saito)

Veteran of many scenes, Liar returns from a prolonged hiatus to dip his toes in TonTon's rising wave. His contribution ranges from balearic breakbeat workouts & intimate dub siestas, to impish takes on world music & electrofunk. Liar's knack for cultural & stylistic interbreeding pervades throughout - you will hear Paisley Park homages, falsetto crooning, comical cuicas, city pop ornaments, 70s radiophonic psychedelia & Final Fantasy samples alike, flamboyantly converging into an artifact of stubborn hope, love & peace.
