Starting with a tribute to “Pizzica,” an ancient form of music used to heal those suffering from mysterious illnesses, and featuring liturgical music from Mount Athos, a sacred site in Greece, as well as audio recordings from the Geneva Museum of Ethnography—the French label 〈Flee Project〉 has been crafting a niche, eclectic sound through a blend of original works and remixes by contemporary artists. Their new release is a project spotlighting the musical heritage of Louisiana in the southern United States. Sides A and B feature roots music, while sides C and D include works by contemporary artists using those recordings. The label’s customary limited-edition book version is also now in stock.

A compilation by the 〈Flee Project〉 that spotlights the musical heritage of Louisiana, a state in the southern United States also known for New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. “Pasé Bél Tan” is said to be a term in Louisiana Creole—with French immigrant influences—that roughly translates to “memories of the good old days.” The compilation highlights music that blends the culture of French immigrants with that of Black people from Africa and Latin America, as well as Indigenous peoples such as the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. It also features contemporary artists such as MADTEO, CYRIL CYRIL, Nappynappa of Model Home, Yama Warashi—a Japanese-American artist whose work draws inspiration from traditional Japanese music to African music—and Juu4e, a Thai rapper well-known in the EDM scene. It explores the process by which this culture has shaped its surroundings and, in turn, has been shaped by them. Through contributions from key figures in the scene—including musicians, researchers, club owners, and other important witnesses—this edition, which includes a 272-page book in both English and French, aims to present the complex and unique relationship that exists between Louisiana and its music.”

The double vinyl compilation and its OBI strip features a staggering 34 songs, ranging from French ballads and Creole renditions to zydeco hooks and reinterpretations by a wide array of contemporary artists such as Madteo, Tanz Mein Herz, Radio Hito, Cyril Cyril, and Deafkids, among others. With archival recordings and contemporary creations side by side, it serves as a bridge across the vast bayou of Louisiana music.

The book is a 272-page bilingual (French/English) publication that seeks to encapsulate the far-reaching implications of Louisiana’s musical heritage within both Louisianan and American society. It explores how this culture has shaped—and been shaped by—its surroundings.
