Since first meeting Tony Allen, he has spent years as the pianist, guitarist, and percussionist of Brazilian Afrobeat standard-bearers Bixiga 70, while also performing alongside Gal Costa, João Donato, and others — a keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist who has helped shape a corner of contemporary Brazilian music. Now Mauricio Fleury's solo album "Revoada" arrives via the acclaimed German label Altercat, whose reissue of Fernando Gelbard's "Didi" was equally superb!!

A groovy Brazilian jazz-funk, fusion-tinged crossover world recalling the heyday of Brazil's jazz giants — Azymuth, Deodato, the golden era of CTI Records — beautifully blended with the exotic flavors of Turkish psychedelia and Ethio-jazz, plus '70s soundtrack soul-jazz: the result is a masterpiece marking the cutting edge of contemporary Brazilian music. Six tracks, with the warm, expansive ring of the Fender Rhodes proving especially captivating.
Conceived as a record of a "sonic journey" from the inland Brazil where he long lived out to the cities, the album is an inventive, brilliantly realized fusion of his new life in Berlin, where he relocated in 2022, and his many years of musical exploration in Brazil.
