In the early ’90s, DJ GARTH moved from the UK to the U.S. and, together with Jeno, Markie Mark, and others, launched “WICKED,” a full-moon party that became the roots of the house rave scene. The iconic label 〈GRAYHOUND〉—a symbol of San Francisco’s 1990s underground house scene, named after the group’s habit of loading sound systems onto decommissioned buses from the famous American bus company Greyhound and touring the country—is seeing its masterpieces reissued on vinyl. While maintaining connections with artists like DJ Harvey and Doc Martin, the label—much like the Wicked Soundsystem, Tonka Sound System, and the UK’s 1990s underground house scene—draws on the traditions of warehouse party culture, as well as a deep respect for the US, NYC’s house scenes, while also drawing from the soil of counterculture and psychedelic culture—that quintessentially West Coast party spirit and “dope” vibe remain as captivating as ever.
