An unparalleled psychedelic journey fusing indigenous Taiwanese folklore with the obsession for the occult and paranormal phenomena that the media hyped up in the '80s. Mong Tong is a psych duo of brothers Hom Yu and Jiun Chi — also active as members of Prairie WWWW and Dope Purple — who appear blindfolded with red and black cloth. This is their 2000 debut album on Guruguru Brain, the label run by the members of Kikagaku Moyo. We have a limited restock of the 2023 repress, back in stock after a long absence.

"Mystery 秘神," recorded at a home studio in Taipei. It's the starting point for the duo's exploration of a shared fascination with art inspired by Taiwan's occult culture and with the superstitious imagery rooted there since ancient times, expressed through music. Growing up in 1990s Taiwan, the brothers say they listened to Chinese-flavored synth pop, video game music, psychedelic music, doom metal, plus sound collage and library music. Layer onto those influences an affection for the dark humor and conspiracy theories found in Taiwanese folklore, and you get something wonderfully shady. Or was it just our imagination that we heard the sounds of the 3D Pinball that came bundled with old versions of Windows (surely many of you wasted plenty of time on it)? (Original Japanese text by Adachi)
