KHÔRA, a project by avant-garde musician MATTHEW RAMOLO—who has been making waves in Toronto’s underground scene—is releasing a new album in collaboration with his longtime ally MAS AYA! The album distills the mystery and intensity of the inner world into eight mandala-like instrumental tracks. The album fuses scales that transcend ethnic boundaries, diverse rhythms, and advanced electronic processing techniques. Highlights include “Sutra,” an electro-acoustic piece where pastoral and ethnic melodies intertwine with cutting-edge electronic music, and “Cosmic Fire,” a polyrhythmic workout that captivates the listener. The album freely traverses free jazz, dub, raga, and ambient genres through intricate sound design. Beyond its precise rhythmic structures and cross-genre techniques, this mandala-like soundscape also offers a sense of auditory immediacy—as if hand percussion were being played right before your ears.
