From *SOUFFLE CONTINU*, a label dedicated to reissuing avant-garde jazz from the ’60s and ’70s as well as French jazz. From Philadelphia-born saxophonist and flutist—and a versatile musician who mastered a wide range of instruments—legendary jazz player BYARD LANCASTER (1942–2012) released four albums on JEF GILSON’s 〈PALM RECORDS〉; now, “Exactement” (1974) is being reissued! What stands out above all else is LANCASTER’s wind instrument playing; he switches between a wide range of instruments with the ease of a tightrope walker, delivering a free and expansive performance that draws out the full potential of each instrument’s range. It’s also essential to mention two tracks that stand out as particularly unique within the album. The album opens with the breathtaking “Sweet Evil Miss” Kisianga (sample 1), a piano piece that creates a mystical, expansive atmosphere, reflecting a strong influence from Alice Coltrane rather than John Coltrane. Also featured is “Exactement” (sample 2), which welcomes Keno Speller on drums and percussion and showcases African rhythms and textures. This historic masterpiece explores the possibilities of free jazz from various angles. As expected, the original is a rarity, making this reissue a welcome addition. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
