Parallel to the development of raï from the 1980s through the 1990s, gasba music—rooted in Bedouin traditions—also evolved independently while interacting with it. A compilation of modern Algerian soul originating in Oran! The hypnotic sound of the “gasba”—a reed flute used in ritual music—combines with heavy drum machines and bass to create a fiery psychedelic groove that even hints at R&B influences. 21st-century Gaspah music where tradition and modernity coexist!

〈HIVE MIND〉—a major label known for its extensive catalog of experimental works and for reissuing artists such as MAALEM MAHMOUD GANIA—has teamed up with 〈ÉDITION AHLEM〉, a label and production company based in Oran, Algeria, to launch a large-scale project compiling contemporary Gasba music! As the sophisticated sounds of pop-ry have gained international recognition, Gasba music—which served as its foundation—has also continued to evolve. Auto-Tune-processed vocals, arrangements featuring home keyboards, and the interplay of electronic rhythms with traditional Gasba tones have resulted in Algerian soul music that preserves tradition while embracing modernity. These 10 tracks capture the essence of “living music” that continues to evolve in contemporary Algerian society, while retaining echoes of ancient rituals and poetic forms. Just as pop rai incorporates urban cabaret culture, the drum machine beats here also invite you to dance. A dizzying, unique psychedelia emerges, featuring a trance-like groove that makes you sway with vitality, complemented by the sound of ethnic flutes. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
