"The Aesthetics of Electronic Music" is a compilation series from the French label *Cosmocities* that focuses on the artists who have shaped Japan’s electronic and dance music scene. Following the third installment—the first in three years—the fourth installment has now arrived. Curated by label founder Matt Soulie, this selection thoughtfully bridges the past and present of Japanese electronic music based on the label’s aesthetic, allowing listeners to once again appreciate its global influence and depth.

Vol. 4 dives deep into the dance floor—even within this series, which has also featured works focused on ambient and electronic music for listening pleasure. We kick things off with Kaoru Inoue’s remix from *Art Farmer Remixes* (2002) by Kyoto-based jam band Soft—who also released a new single this year—followed by the album version of Crystal’s (now XTAL) “Heavenly Overtone,” making its vinyl debut here. It also includes tracks like “Low Tension” by Slow Didi, Tokyo Black Star, and Manabu Nagayama & Soichi Terada (remixed by YoshiFumi); the “The Backwoods Remix” from the 2012 EP by Hiroshi Watanabe and Kaoru Inoue (a.k.a. Chari Chari); and even an alternate version of a track from YAMADA the GIANT’s 2024 EP—a collaboration with Bitowa that’s still fresh in our memories. It’s a collection of timeless tracks that DJs should definitely check out. The compilation offers a taste of the rich creativity of Japanese house music from the 21st century onward. Please take a look at the tracklist. (Original Japanese text by Adachi)
