"FRINGE IN THE BOX" — a project in which select minimal and house producers remix superb performances by Turin's sharpest jazz musicians!!! Vinyl only, 300 limited copies.

A joint project between the "Torino Jazz Festival," held across Italy's second industrial city of Turin, and the London music agency "Pitch and Folks": during last March's festival, some 30 local jazz musicians were invited to record the source performances, and local producer HUGO took the lead in releasing those recordings to the public, with the four acts placing highest in a remix contest run on SOUNDCLOUD getting their dance tracks pressed to vinyl. It opens with "Take 1." (sample1), a beatless half-step-flavored track by local Turin duo BRANDUMIZE, featuring a trumpet blowing out loud over a bed of electronics and nimble jazz drumming, and the A-side continues with the loose-jointed groove of "Take 2." from ANDREA FRELIN, head of the Cagliari-based outsider minimal label 〈Sleep Is Commercial〉. Then there's HUGO's funky "Take 3." (sample2), which makes the most of the pristine live source material, and the disco-dubby "Take 4." (sample3) by Rome's TBOY, who has also released on the UK's 〈Outcross〉. A great concept record packed with a strange charm that's as fun as it is rewarding to listen to!
