BRAINFEEDER's 10th-anniversary run of special releases keeps rolling, and this new one is another beauty. Guests include close ally Thundercat, the brilliant Brad Mehldau — one of the defining figures in jazz piano today — and maestro Louis Cole himself, and the record unfurls a dazzling world of blue-eyed soul & funk, weaving high-level songwriting reminiscent of Michael Jackson, Prince and Pharrell together with sweet falsetto vocals and a fierce funkiness that sounds like EW&F crossed with P-Funk and G-funk. Start with the advance single "When You're Ugly (feat. Genevieve Artadi)" (sample1), then the opening track "Weird Part of The Night" (sample2). As the album moves into its second half, more singer-songwriter-style numbers appear. Be sure to check the tracklist too, and don't miss the two music videos.
