From ATHENS OF THE NORTH, whose run of superb releases continues, comes a compilation gathering unreleased 1987–2004 recordings by Dennis Young, percussionist and mainman of Liquid Liquid — the no wave disco/post-punk band who, alongside ESG, defined 99 Records, the legendary early-1980s NY underground label!!!
The collection of unreleased 1980s meditative synthesizer material on Bureau B was wonderful too, but this new set of unreleased tracks from ATHENS OF THE NORTH, "Primitive Substance," is fantastic as well. Post-Liquid Liquid, it drifts into a somehow urban-Balearic, cosmic/tropical fusionoid/exotic dusk, full of wistful, primitive nostalgia and groove. Dennis Young's one-of-a-kind personality, transcending any sense of era, is simply beautiful and cool.
