A truly unsung master of spiritual jazz. He was a member of Horace Tapscott's The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra — the collective founded in 1961 whose ranks have included Phil Ranelin, Nate Morgan and, more recently, Kamasi Washington — appearing on the orchestra's definitive albums "The Call" and "Live At I.U.C.C." He also played alongside jazz giants such as Gerald Wilson, Anita O'Day and Lionel Hampton, and featured on the Roy Porter Sound Machine classic "Jessica." Here the spiritual and free elements are kept to a minimum, making for a catchy set: a modal, emotive A-side paired with a mellow, easygoing ballad B-side. The tapes were recently discovered in an archive, with almost no information beyond Lester's name and the track titles, so unfortunately the personnel remain uncredited.
