From the ever-reliable Freestyle Records — home to a string of great reissues of '80s and '90s UK light funk, disco, Brit-funk and reggae crossover — comes another gem: precious dubplates cut over "Promised Land," the killer '80s roots riddim best known from Dennis Brown's big hit of 1992, a blissful, bluesy African-tinged groove that rolls along beautifully. Now getting a proper 12-inch vinyl release!!

Albert "Alchemist" Thompson, the man behind the celebrated Promised Land riddim, relocated from LA to Jamaica in 1989 and worked as chief engineer at I&I Sound Recording Studio, racking up sessions with Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer, Mighty Diamonds, Gregory Isaacs and many more. Then in 1991, with the help of assistant Tony Thomas, he created "Promised Land," his take on Aswad's Love Fire riddim. Sixteen years later, in 2007, Albert moved to London and set up Alchemist Recording Studio, where he cut dubplates over the rhythm featuring Frankie Paul and four local MCs and singers. And now, another sixteen years on, in 2023, those recordings finally see an official 12-inch vinyl release via Freestyle. Cause for celebration!!!! (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
