The various worlds of ambient music that Haruomi Hosono explored from the mid-'80s through the mid-'90s are proposed anew, some thirty years later, as the soundtrack to the film "Undercurrent" (2023). That musical world feels like a thread connecting the 2018 "Shoplifters" soundtrack, 2019's "Hochono House," and his 2024 production of Narumi Yasuda's "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind 2024 ver." — and, if we may say so, it can also be heard as a prologue that stirs strong anticipation for the dawn of a new era in Hosono's ambient music. With something of the spirit of Gavin Bryars' masterpiece "The Sinking of the Titanic," it is simple yet elegant, with a sense of interstitial space, a steady poise and deep flavor, and a quietly abiding romantic allure as undersea ambient music brimming with imaginary lyricism.
