Michael Mayer — the acclaimed producer/artist and founder of the legendary KOMPAKT label/distributor, who alongside Wolfgang Voigt has long driven Cologne's electronic music and techno scene — returns with "The Floor Is Lava," his fourth album and first new full-length in eight years since "&"!!

Opening the album is A1 "The Problem" (sample 1) at 110 BPM, an exquisite track only he could make, nodding to '90s house in the vein of Pal Joey and Rockers Hi-Fi while still feeling thoroughly modern and forward-looking. A2 "Vagus" at 118 BPM is sticky, melancholic European electronic deep house; B1 "Feuerstuhl" at 121 BPM builds from hypnotic, repeating phrases into something gradually more soulful and euphoric; B2 "Kiss And Tell" at 106 BPM rides beatdown breakbeats with a bouncy, charmingly quirky groove. Also fascinating are C1 "Brainwave 2.0" (sample 2) at 124 BPM, where musique concrète-style everyday sounds are arranged three-dimensionally into a kind of in-the-head sonic house, and D1 "Sycophant" (sample 3) at 128 BPM, a stoic slice of electro-funk techno with vocoder robo-vocals and endlessly rising tones. The closer, D3 "Süßer Schlaf," is a tribute to a departed friend, quoting Goethe's poetry as the album draws to a close. A richly flavored, clearly long-in-the-making gem of tech romanticism. 2LP, 9 tracks total. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
