MR BONGO reissues "Funk Reaction" ('77), a disco-funk masterpiece by Lonnie Smith, a master of the Hammond B3 organ, which showcases his most dance floor-friendly sound!

Lonnie Smith, a jazz player who played with George Benson and Lou Donaldson in the 1960s and released albums on Columbia and Blue Note labels, entered the disco-funk realm in the late 1970s. This is a very fine, no-doubt composition featuring some of the elite session players of the time, including drummer Steve Gadd, guitarist Lance Quinn, and bassist Bob Babbitt. The six tracks are of the finest quality, moving back and forth between jazz funk, cosmic disco brilliance, beat-driven slow jams, and conscious psychedelic soul. Only the last track is a bit different, with the Stevie Wonder-esque jazzy soul of "All In My Mind" (the only Lonnie Smith-penned song on the album), which is also interesting in that it is a vocal piece. A must-listen for fans of George Benson, Donald Byrd, and CTI during the jazz-funk era. (Original Japanese text by AYAM)
