Sofie Royer is a singer-songwriter who, despite deep roots in dance music and club culture—collaborations with Toro Y Moi, Mndsgn, and Peanut Butter Wolf, plus being a founding member of Boiler Room—has stubbornly kept building her work on a pop foundation. The phrase "Young Girl" is borrowed from "Preliminary Materials for a Theory of the Young-Girl," published in the French anarchist journal Tiqqun; the record celebrates the Young-Girl while condemning the culture that produced her, voicing a longing for liberation. The anguish, inner conflict, and strange optimism particular to the Young-Girl are painted in a distinctively nostalgic sound. Within a set built mainly on '80s〜'90s electro-pop reminiscent of Charlotte Gainsbourg, the rare disco excursions "Sage Comme Une Image" (sample_1) and "I Forget (I'm So Young)" (sample_2) feel especially fresh.
