Social structures, low wages and skyrocketing rents, her distaste for being categorized as a "Black character" — the album is written in lyrics and expressed across R&B, hip-hop, jazz, soul, dance music, and the soca of Barbados, her family's roots, all in a way only she, a self-described working-class Black artist, could pull off. Eighteen tracks whose backing performances and production are just as compelling: "dream girl" (sample 1), a mid-tempo synth-boogie of the kind quietly gaining momentum in the US soul/R&B scene; "breakthrough" (sample 2), with its nimble piano loop, unexpected effects and bouncy vocals; and "raisins" (sample 3), a melancholy jazz ballad produced by DJ Harrison built on a Fender Rhodes riff. 2LP.
