As an unprecedented avant-garde shinobue album, flutist and shinobue player Yuki Fujiwara’s debut album *Glass Colored Lily*—produced by master Bill Laswell and released in September 2024—is now available on vinyl from the Greek label *defkaz*! Spiritual jazz that explores the identity of traditional music. Also appealing to fans of ambient music. Includes an obi strip and is pressed on 180g pink-tinted vinyl.

She began playing the shinobue as a child after joining the Kaminoyama Domain Drum and Fife Band, a designated Intangible Cultural Property of Yamagata Prefecture, and later became the first female captain of the band. She is a certified music therapist and has worked as a music teacher in Nepal and provided support for people with social withdrawal through music; she also performed the first-ever shinobue recital in history at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This album, her first solo release, was recorded at Bill Laswell’s vintage studio, which was originally owned by Frankie Valli. Alongside saxophonist Mitsuhiro Sonoyama, it captures a completely improvised, once-in-a-lifetime session with musicians gathered by Laswell. Echoing Bill Laswell—who plays an 8-string bass and attempts to transform all phenomena into sound—the shinobue takes the lead with its blend of ancient and modern tones, traversing the spectrum of time and space in a noteworthy ensemble that evokes memories of Toshi Ichiyanagi and Toru Takemitsu. A must-listen for fans of the music created by Reishu Fukushima and Satoshi Fukushima. (Original Japanese text by Adachi)
