The Dedalus Ensemble, a contemporary music ensemble based in Toulouse, France, whose repertoire includes works by Moon Dog, Héliane Ladigue, Tom Johnson, and Brian Eno. For this performance, they will present the minimalist classic “Music with Changing Parts,” composed in 1970 by Philip Glass, a master of minimalist music. With feather-light pulses and celestial harmonies that roll on endlessly without a break, this is a rare and extraordinary performance that plays with the listener’s perception.

“Music with Changing Parts,” a seminal work in the history of minimalism, was written for a flexible ensemble configuration; performers can freely choose their parts from a score divided into eight staves and switch parts upon a designated cue. This allows the ensemble configuration to change spontaneously, creating sonic contrasts. This recording features a 54-minute utopian masterpiece spread across two LPs, created through a new interpretation in which the musicians first played the eighth-note sections and then re-recorded the piece by layering longer notes on top.
