Monotone muttered German vocals, cold wave-descended electronics, and heavy basslines all pulling against each other. A raw, body-shaking sound clash! A machine jam that should hit home with slow-techno followers too. Recommended. The new release from KLANG TONE — whose previous catalogue entry by modern Ethio-jazz band TEZETA was also superb — comes from synthesizer unit WOOLHEADS.

A superb debut album from WOOLHEADS, a striking unit that clearly carries on the machine-music lineage tracing back to JOHN FOXX and CHRIS & COSEY. An analog session project pairing artist-poet UTA BALDAUF with sound experimentalist SEAN ROE, with modular synths in the mix. From "Apfel" (sample1), a three-mode techno cut that wakes up the brain with monotone poetic vocals and minimal rippling acid, to "Klein" (sample2), an electronic funk jam full of swing. Machine sound that absorbs krautrock, post-punk and cold wave, injected with an addictive pop sense you'll keep coming back to. Recommended. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
