Hive Mind

A timeless ambient masterpiece that takes on the task of dismantling the collective-conscious "nostalgia" so powerfully triggered by the sound of music boxes and toy instruments. The 2025 release on 〈Hive Mind〉 from Lebanon-born Yara Asmar — a multi-instrumentalist, filmmaker and puppeteer who expands her own singular style using unfamiliar instruments such as handmade mechanical music boxes, new materials and unheard sounds. A title that sold out before we could even write it up, now back in stock.

Eleven pieces made over the past year while traveling back and forth between Alfred, New York and Beirut, Lebanon. An exploration of toy pianos that she has spent several years taking apart and rebuilding. On a Symphonion disc music box acquired in New York, she carved poems into the discs normally punched with holes, translating text into sound. Woven through it are archives of personal conversations, birdsong and everyday sounds recorded to open-reel tape by her family and herself, producing a texture like fragments of a dream. Add metallophones and more — she realized that everything she had been using was made of metal — and you're drawn in alongside Yara Asmar by the diverse timbres of metal drawn out by bowing, plucking, rubbing and striking. Recommended. See if you can be freed from nostalgia. (Original Japanese text by Adachi)
