First up, of course, is the commanding rework by the great Laraaji (sample1). The interplay between the voice of Laraaji — a laughter-meditation practitioner and mystic — and that of Hatis Noit creates a one-of-a-kind vocal layering that no synth or instrument could produce. Over it, the maestro's open-tuned zither weaves a nearly eight-minute picture scroll. Matthew Herbert's rework (sample2) turns a single cut-and-collage loop into superb minimal music/techno — seriously cool, and quietly very usable.
And the quality of the silence is simply different here: William Basinski's rework (sample3) introduces delicate piano and makes use of field recordings included in the original track, captured on a shoreline just one kilometer from the Fukushima nuclear power plant struck by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Hatis Noit's voice sounds different again here.
The other tracks are equally diverse, including ones built on Arabic language and glitchy, ASMR-like beeps.
Drawing on influences from gagaku, opera, Bulgarian vocal music, and Gregorian chant, Hatis Noit's own prayer-like essence runs through the whole thing — a superb collection of reworks. Highly recommended for techno fans too. (Original Japanese text by Shhhhh)
