Supple breakbeats, synthesis, and acid combining into blissful harmony. "THE CRY" (1997) on PEACEFROG is still revered as an ambient techno masterpiece, and among his many aliases this side project enjoys a particularly cult following — and now it's back. Second-generation Detroit techno veteran JOHN BELTRAN returns with a new work under the PLACID ANGLES name.

After a long hiatus, the alias returned in 2019 on LONE's MAGICWIRE, and PLACID ANGLES has since released on the likes of AD 93 and FIGURE — now comes a new record on modern dance mainstay KALAHARI OYSTER CULT! "Who We Are" (sample1) pairs echoing cosmic, spiritual synthesis with lithe breaks, while "Sun's Poem" (sample2) is ambient techno that opens with sweeping chords before the drums slowly rise. The vitality in the beats, the beauty of the crystal-clear harmonies — this is the sound of a master operating on another level. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
