A precious collection of recordings from an era when jive, pre-doo-wop a cappella gospel, and vocal groups carried the spiritual and jubilee traditions, blending them with blues, jazz, and early rhythm and blues, and musically underpinned the solidarity of the civil rights movement that grew out of the Black church. Drawing on blues and jazz, these singers gave thanks to God and sang of hope for the deliverance of the soul — a powerful, beautiful, soulful, funky, and vibrant document of the birth of Black gospel out of the spirituals. 16 tracks by 16 artists.
