This work serves as the culmination of his geological exploration of sound, which has taken him across continents—from Iceland to Indonesia (Bali), New Orleans to China, BERZ continued his journey, carrying basalt from millions of years ago as both an “instrument” and a “collaborator” in various locations such as caves and coastlines. On the island of Java, he met Baron, a craftsman who creates stone gamelan instruments, and at Tabuhan Cave in Pacitan, Indonesia, he performed with Misbach Bilok and Wukir Suryadi (Wukir Suryadi / SENYAWA)—who use coral as instruments—while incorporating field recordings from various locations. He completed the project by recording and producing the music using his own drums and electronics to create this album. It features nine tracks brimming with a unique worldview and sonic sensibility, ranging from tribal, percussive breakbeats and floor sounds to ambient music and experimental minimalist drone pieces inspired by gamelan.
