Cedric Brooks is a graduate of the prestigious Alpha Boys School of Music in Kingston, Jamaica, where he worked with The Vagabonds and The Granville Williams Band, and in 1970, he met Count Ossie, with whom he recorded the exotic spiritual In 1970, he met Count Ossie, and played saxophone and flute on the Nyabinghi masterpiece "The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari," for which he also made the horn arrangements. Later, Cedric Brooks was influenced by a wider range of music as he traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Africa, even playing in Addis Ababe, Ethiopia, and all of his musical influences from this period are reflected in this album, "United Africa".
In addition to some of Jamaica's finest musicians of the time, including Ernest Ranglin, Beres Hammond, and Dean Fraser, the album also features Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, and is a sublime, psychedelic blend of reggae, African music, funk, and jazz from the 1970s, performed by some of the best musicians in the world at the time. The result is a sublime fusion of 70's reggae, African music, funk, and jazz.
Cedric Brooks died in New York City in 2013, but his current album, United Africa, has cult status beyond reggae fans among world music and jazz fans, and continues to reign as a timeless musical legacy.
