Known as the drummer of Nação Zumbi and as a film composer, producer Pupillo has worked repeatedly with defining figures of Brazilian music such as Gal Costa and Erasmo Carlos, contributing to the scene across generations. LA's Amor In Sound, run by Samantha and Mario Caldato Jr., releases what amounts to a summation of his work: an album that ranges across the diverse rhythms and sound worlds that shaped him, from the traditional music of Pernambuco in Brazil's northeast to mangue beat, jazz, hip-hop and cinematic sound. It also carries an homage to his great forebear and fellow Pernambucan Naná Vasconcelos, with 12 tracks — largely refined, open and evocative instrumentals — that unfold with the storytelling of a film.
