Based on The Spinners’ timeless 1973 soul classic “I’ll Be Around” and inspired by Johnny Osbourne’s iconic cover of “We Need Love,” this is a superb cover that blends vintage, modern, and soulful sounds with Chicano oldies. A limited-edition 7-inch donut record, hand-numbered to 150 copies, from Gatzara Records—a promising up-and-coming Spanish label known for its string of great releases. I managed to get my hands on one.
It’s brimming with that soulful, youthful vibe. The organ solo and falsetto chorus in the second half will bring tears to your eyes. Absolutely exquisite.
The B-side, “Only Love Can Conquer” (sample 2)—a mellow rework of the Side A sample into a lowrider hip-hop track featuring Rel McCoy on rap—is also top-notch. I’m looking forward to future releases from Gatzara Records. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
