maya ongaku’s long-awaited second album,

maya ongaku’s long-awaited second album, “Nothing Space Music,” is now out—a release that showcases the band’s remarkable depth, having received widespread acclaim for both their live performances and recordings.
The album navigates between tranquility and psychedelia, oscillating between an old-fashioned vibe and a post-ambient sensibility. As the band members themselves have mentioned in interviews, it’s their strong core—which refuses to rely on vague or facile psychedelia—that underpins the entire balance. This can be felt in the careful selection of each word in the Japanese lyrics and the subtle fluctuations in their resonance, as well as in the quiet, understated performances that avoid being overly eccentric. A dignified, quiet step toward the next chapter. A masterpiece!!!! (Shhhhh)
Since their global debut with 2023’s *Approach to Anima*, maya ongaku has been actively performing live both domestically and internationally, earning high acclaim in various regions. In this work, they focus on the “silence” that lies beyond those experiences, taking a step toward a more introspective and profound sound.
While combining repetitive grooves, delicate ensemble work, ambient spatiality, and improvisation, this album possesses the intimacy of pop music that resonates with human memories and emotions, and is filled with an immersive quality that seems to dissolve the sense of time and boundaries. At the same time, the image of a space called “Nothing Space” emerged during the production process. It is not mere nothingness. It is a vast place where memories from all times—past, present, and future—drift, and where boundaries such as sky and sea, yin and yang, sound and silence melt together. From “Vanishing Waves” to “Permanent Waves.” Crossing genres yet belonging to none, this unique sound resonates deeply not only with the domestic indie scene but also with international listeners. This gem of an album, featuring all eight tracks, marks a new milestone for maya ongaku.
