From Tim Hardin’s “If I Were a Carpenter”—a hidden gem of introspective ’60s singer-songwriter folk characterized by a ballad-like intimacy—to “Six Blade Knife,” a hidden masterpiece from Dire Straits’ debut album that showcases their signature early, gritty style. Then there’s the 1970s soft rock track “You Don’t Feel That Way No More” by England’s Dan & John Ford Cole and “Sapelo” by Larry Jon Wilson—though they differ in genre and era, they both lie at the intersection of country and folk, revising 1970s American roots music using dub and loop techniques to transform its melancholy into a soothing experience.
