A bizarre masterpiece that samples the sounds of stingless bees and collages them into avant-garde broken beat and slow techno! An unconventional release from 〈BAROQUE SUNBURST〉, an avant-garde bass-pioneering imprint launched as a sister label to Milan’s 〈BEAT MACHINE〉—Brazilian interdisciplinary artist JOÃO MACHADO experiments with sound through a dance-music approach. Highly recommended!
Track List

A curveball from 〈BAROQUE SUNBURST〉, a label that has been home to avant-garde bass sound artists ranging from OM UNIT to FLØRIST and PUGILIST. This experimental electronic dance production features the collected and processed sounds of the stingless honeybee—also known as the “stingless wasp”—a species whose stinger has degenerated over the course of evolution, rendering it incapable of stinging. Kicking off with “Uruçu” (sample 1)—which blends noisy, processed samples into a synthesized sound with a mysterious touch while unleashing an intense broken beat—this unique sonic world unfolds uninterrupted for 40 minutes. Not only is the sample work so meticulously processed that it’s difficult to distinguish which sounds are actual buzzing calls, but the abstractly constructed rhythmic framework is also complex. It’s unique in that it maintains musicality and groove while grounded in an academic perspective—be sure to check out the tracklist as well. (Original Japanese text by Akie)
