Featuring SHONKY’s signature style in full force—with his distinctive, trippy sample work and punchy bottom-bounce beats still going strong—this left-field tech adds a unique edge to any DJ set! Highly recommended. A member of the Paris-based DJ trio and label “APOLLONIA,” SHONKY—who has also released tracks as a producer on labels such as 〈HALF BAKED〉, 〈CROSSTOWN〉, and 〈RAWAX〉—has a new release out. The first pressing is already sold out.
The third release from *CUSTOMS & FACES*, co-founded by IVAN SMAGGHE and NIV ARZI—a label I’ve personally been keeping an eye on for its release of trip-sound tracks tailored for the creek scene, such as the ROMAN FLÜGEL remix—brings the welcome arrival of SHONKY. Tracks like the tech-trip “Onthekoon” (sample 1)—which features processed vocal samples and a melancholic melody chain that creeps along in an eerie way—and “Speak & Spell” (sample 2), with its signature tight, bouncy bassline and collage-style sampling, are both solidly good.
