A low-key album that emerged from the OZ DISC scene of the ’90s—one that was released too early to be called “Japanese ambient.” Released in 1999 by Lakeside, a guitar duo formed by Kazumitsu Yamaguchi and Yoshio Nomura of Machikomi, it was followed by a remix album the next year. *Slow Anthology*, a masterpiece that uses nothing but the resonance of guitars to paint an ambient space that accompanies your daily life, has arrived on vinyl. It’s the perfect album to have on hand for those times when you just don’t feel like listening to anything. (Adachi)

An album by a little-known guitar duo released in 1999. Their songs—composed solely of guitars and making heavy use of harmonics—were beautiful pieces that evoked an ambient-like tranquility; during their live performances at the time, they even collaborated with 8mm film projections. However, while the album received high praise from a select few, the overall response was very limited. At the time, the indie scene had not yet begun to reevaluate ambient-style sounds, and there were virtually no other groups performing such simple instrumental music live. As a result, I believe this music was extremely difficult to categorize and found it hard to establish a clear niche.
However, once the 2010s arrived and Japanese ambient music was being reevaluated globally, this album was rediscovered, and the remaining stock of CDs sold out in an instant. Amid calls for a reissue, we’d like to unleash this music anew with this first-ever vinyl release. KEN KEN—now known as URBAN VOLCANO SOUNDS—also makes a guest appearance.
Whether you want to take your time exploring this little-known hidden gem or simply use it as background music for your daily life, this acoustic guitar instrumental album creates beautiful moments that seep into the very atmosphere around you.
