NICK NICELY — the nice man who put out a self-released single in '81 and a single 7-inch on EMI the following year, '82, drawing attention with his warped, fanciful psychedelic-pop sensibility, exerting an influence so strong that even Andy Partridge was envious, and reportedly spurring XTC into their alter-ego project The Dukes Of Stratosphear — a cult figure who then released essentially nothing until the 2000s. (In the '90s he worked as the house unit Psychotropic, producing loft classics such as "Hypnosis.") From '00 onward, American labels issued reissues and compilations of his older material, and more recently he was featured on UNKLE's track "Puppeteers," fueling a growing reappraisal — and now, from the UK's 〈EMOTIONAL RESPONSE〉, run chiefly by Stuart Leath, comes a remix release of "Wrottersley Road" from the new album he issued on cassette in 2011! Alongside the superb original, which rides his utterly undiminished, dreamlike songwriting atop a roaring wall of fuzz, the record includes a remix by label head Stuart Leath as Invisible Hands, mixing tremolo wave effects with field recordings (sample2), and a surging The Oscillations remix that adds rhythm and bass (sample3).
