Devotion to and obsession with '70s pop and soul are carefully woven together, and the songwriting talent shines: the Japan-only CD release from JORN ALESKJAER, a rising blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter from Norway. Along with Mockey's new album, this feels like it could be one of 2015's best home-listening records. Wonderful.
Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, of course, but also craftsman singer-songwriters like Todd Rundgren and Billy Joel, plus the blue-eyed soul and pre-AOR of early Hall & Oates and Christopher Cross, the '70s new soul of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, and even the songwriting of UK guitar rock acts like Lloyd Cole—all of it seems to connect naturally on a single horizon. While his affection and admiration for his predecessors comes through in a heart-tugging way, there's also a mood you might call a delicate, elegant weightlessness unique to our era, and together with that distinctly Nordic atmosphere it conveys a jewel-like individuality and talent, both modern and retro. The appeal of music that never fades comes across with real sincerity. May you enjoy it for years to come. This album was released on CD in his native Norway in 2012, but was nearly impossible to obtain outside the country; it later saw a 2014 US release, though only as a 300-copy limited vinyl pressing plus digital.
