"Promised Land" by the Nairobi Sisters — the 1975 rare-groove reggae funk treasure with its mellow, laid-back, strangely bewitching charm, sampled by Q-Tip on "Whateva Will Be," one of the standout cuts on A Tribe Called Quest's masterful 2016 final album — gets a miracle official 7-inch reissue on 333, the reggae-specialist sublabel of Death Is Not The End. The B-side dub is dope and funky too. The label had been sold out and hard to find for the past few years, but a welcome repress has arrived!! Back in stock for the first time in a while!!

The Nairobi Sisters were a duo of singers Terrie Nairobi and Judy Mowatt (later a member of the I-Threes alongside Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths). The song was written by producer/songwriter Winston Jones, who moved from Jamaica to New York and was the original singer and composer of "Stop That Train" (later made world-famous by the Keith & Tex cover version). It was released on Flames Records, the Brooklyn label he founded and ran from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, a central hub of that city's reggae scene. The 333 label appears to have licensed a range of material from Jones, who is now based in Texas, so future releases are something to look forward to. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
