Sinatra-esque luxury and a mood of melancholy, an enveloping warmth like the Shabason & Krgovich records, delicately scattered sound effects. The mix and mastering, which bring out the character of each instrument, are superb as well. With Phil Melanson — drummer on records by Sam Gendel, Sam Amidon and Andy Shauf — plus Joseph Shabason's longtime partner Nicholas Krgovich and a 30-piece orchestra led by violinist Owen Pallett, they've completed a pop album as dramatic as a film.
