Digging Central Asia: Musical Archaeology Along the Silk Road
Death Is Not The End - Cat No: DEATH096LP
- updated:2026-04-29
Anvar Kalandarov, who has devoted himself to unearthing rare, hidden musical treasures from across Central Asia and who last year released the acclaimed compilation "Synthesizing the Silk Roads" — gathering 1980s Uzbek disco, Tajik folktronica, Uyghur rock and Tatar jazz — now sees his imaginary, downer mixtape masterpiece "Digging Central Asia," originally released on DINT and built from recordings made between the 1970s and the early 1990s to feel like a journey through the psychedelic landscapes of the Silk Road, finally issued on vinyl LP!!! Wonderful.
Track List

"Digging Central Asia: Musical Archaeology Along the Silk Road," the superb mixtape gem by Tashkent, Uzbekistan-born music archaeologist/musician/producer Anvar Kalandarov — released via Death Is Not The End in collaboration with the Uzbek label Maqom Soul, and mixed into an imaginary psychedelic Silk Road journey using a wealth of material recorded across Central Asia between the 1970s and the early 1990s — has finally been pressed to vinyl LP. Folky yet full of warbling synthesizers, funky disco and rare-groove flavors slipping into downer jazz, a laid-back, timeless and melancholy sound world: 28:17 on the A-side, 27:22 on the B-side. Highly recommended. (Original Japanese text by COMPUMA)
