ENSEMBLE NIST-NAH — the nine-piece hybrid percussion group led by Australian drummer Will Guthrie, a Nantes, France resident also known for his collaborations with Mark Fell — returns with a new second album, "Spilla," once again released on Black Truffle!! His solo albums and the group's previous debut were superb, but this one is another masterpiece, a thrilling spark of post-avant-garde gamelan percussion minimalism rhythm ensemble filtered through techno and experimental music!! Nine tracks of modern, exotic, trancey, uniquely original, elegant and alluring post-avant-garde gamelan percussion ensemble meditation — drawing on Indonesian traditional music like gamelan and jegog, plus assorted junk and traditional instruments and drum kits, all filtered through Harry Partch, contemporary composition, Autechre-esque IDM, Ornette Coleman-style free jazz, noise and experimental music, and techno tribal experimentation.
