It opens with "I'm Under Your Spell," a mellow soul/disco cut released only on 7-inch by MIND & MATTER, the high-school band of Jimmy Jam, the producer who would go on to secure an unshakable place in history as half of Jam & Lewis. From there: "If You See Me," a modern soul piece by 94 East, the Minneapolis funk band that once counted Prince among its members; "Dreamality," a funky track with unique rhythm changes by the NY student indie-funk outfit UNIVERSAL TOGETHERNESS BAND; "I'm Giving Up" (sample_2), a superb piece of modern soul with surging cutting guitar from Brooklyn/NY singer CLIFTON DYSON; and "Take To The Sky" (sample_3), psychedelic soul-disco by WEE, who worked the local scene out of Columbus, Ohio. Every track carries that lopsided, slightly loose quality only local and self-released records have, and the songwriting is simply wonderful. A truly gem-packed lineup. Highly recommended!
