Bandleader Bobby Matos studied under legendary timbales player Willie Bobo, popular funk-leaning Cuban conguero Mongo Santamaría, and master conga player Carlos "Patato" Valdes. Rooted in Afro-Cuban style while incorporating jazz improvisation and phrasing, his approach went on to have a major influence on the Latin jazz scene that followed. "Tema De Alma Latina" (sample_2), with its driving momentum, delicate arrangement, deep percussion, and standout solos from every player, has been spun endlessly by DJs around the world ever since it appeared on a Gilles Peterson compilation in 1987. There's no shortage of hidden gems either, from the flute-driven "Mambo Maxims" (sample_1) to "Thoughts," a study in the beauty of tension and release.
