Stan Hubbs wrote poetry his entire life and kept making music locally in California, reportedly self-publishing several volumes of poems along the way. A heavy smoker, he died in 1996 from complications of lung cancer. Around the age of 42, Hubbs was living in a mountain community in Northern California, leading a largely self-sufficient life while putting together several bands that played occasional gigs at local bars — and it was during this period that he completed this record. Perhaps owing to the area's lingering hippie culture, the lyrics touch on drugs, life and death, and a hippie outlook on existence, which later gave rise in the market to the outlandish tagline "the man who died of a weed OD." "He certainly enjoyed marijuana, but the ridiculous rumor that he died of an overdose simply isn't true," his younger brother testified in an interview with NUMERO.
