in filth your mystery is kingdom / far smile peasant in yellow music, the debut album by Brooklyn-based Nicaraguan-American musician Dagmar Zuniga, recorded across five years from 2019 to 2024. The sensibility of today's singer-songwriters, in league with Jessica Pratt, Cindy Lee, and Joanne Robertson. Tactile harmonies and a gravitational pull in the singing that recall psych-folk pioneers like Linda Perhacs, Karen Dalton, and Vashti Bunyan. Every recording was made on a longtime companion, the Tascam 424 four-track cassette MTR, with tape hiss, distortion, and degradation actively treated as sonic material. Foregrounding the physicality of recording, this is a lo-fi experimental folk gem where the recording method itself becomes the composition. Featuring Austyn Wohlers on flute, Zach Phillips on piano, and Hayes Hoey on vocals/guitar/keyboards. An artist to watch, with further collaborations surely on the horizon. Highly recommended.
