Building on the folk songs and traditional rhythms explored in their previous work, this album places additional emphasis on the use of field recordings, resulting in an electro-acoustic sound that immerses listeners in the album’s unique world. Milan-based sound artist ROSSO POLARE’s new album is out on 〈12TH ISLE〉! The album employs diegetic sound design, using audio elements as if they belong to the world of the work itself—a technique that confuses the listener, making them wonder where the sounds are coming from and whether they are actually part of the piece. Music that straddles the line between folk and concrete music. Highly recommended!

Milan-based ROSSO POLARE, signed to Glasgow’s leading electronic music label E 12TH ISLEE , has released “Cacciamali”—the follow-up to their debut album “Campo Amaro,” which explored experimental music through the lens of folk music! The sound draws from both folk and musique concrète, with a new focus this time on the use and exploration of field recordings. Biophonic sounds and ambient noises overlay idyllic flute and string melodies. Rather than simply layering these sounds, they’re treated as diegetic sounds—designed as acoustic events within the work—which is quite intriguing. Featuring prominent figures such as Riccardo Sinigaglia, a leading figure in the Italian avant-garde, and sound researcher HMOT (STAS SHÄRIFULLA), this album—with its delicate processing, distortion, and manipulation—could almost be called a work of sound craftsmanship. It offers a multifaceted experience, featuring not only mixing and sound engineering that seem to test the listener’s sense of direction but also the warm melodic beauty rooted in folk music.
