Based at “Soto”—Kyoto’s premier experimental music venue—the three-piece band Kukan Gendai, which performs worldwide, has released its latest album on the Toronto-based avant-garde label Marionette, which has continued to put out excellent electroacoustic releases following 〈Ideologic Organ〉 and 〈Ulyssa〉, and now releases its latest work on the cutting-edge Toronto-based label 〈Marionette〉, which continues to put out excellent electro-acoustic releases. This is a live recording of a purely acoustic ensemble using a custom binaural microphone designed by Taku Unami. A new frontier for Kukan Gendai.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 〈Marionette〉 in 2025, Kukan Gendai—who performed alongside them during the domestic tour of the label showcase co-hosted with Dotei Records—is releasing a new album on this label! Relying solely on acoustic instruments rather than electronic sounds, this album captures the raw, three-dimensional quality of the performance through recordings made with a binaural microphone specially crafted by Taku Unami, who also handled the mastering. Absorbing the give-and-take of jazz, the driving force of Krautrock, the earthiness of the blues, and sensibilities reminiscent of Tuareg music—and then deconstructing and reassembling them—the familiar instrumental sounds take on a soft, strange texture that defies any specific era. A trinity of acoustic ensemble—Junya Noguchi (g), Keisuke Furuyano (db, harm), and Hideaki Yamada (ds, perc)—that draws out a twisted sensibility from the misalignments and misalignments of repetition. The ultimate expression of sonic arrangement and obsessive physical groove. Five tracks in total. (Original Japanese text by Adachi)
